President Rich announced that RI President Elect Sam Owori, passed away July 13 from complications after surgery. He is largely credited with the tremendous increase in clubs in Uganda: from nine in 1988, when he was district governor, to 89 today.
Mark your calendar: The annual evening at the Lumberking Ball Park will be Monday, August 14 A sign-up sheet will be passed around again at the July 24 meeting. Gates open at 5:00 pm. Pick up tickets at table in front of the ticket office. All you can eat burgers, hot dogs, brats, chicken sandwiches, chips, baked beans and peanuts - plus all you care to drink beer, soda and water. Party lasts until the game's scheduled start time. Rotary will pay for yourself and one guest. Bring as many guests as you want and pay at the table in front of the ticket office for your additional guests (kids under 5 yrs - free; age 6 - 13 yrs are $12; age 14 - 20 yrs $16; age 21 yrs and up are $25). Remember: the picnic starts from the time of the gates opening to first pitch.President Rich Klahn will throw the "first pitch" at approx. 6:20 pm.

Speaker: Carly Vannoy is the 2017 Iowa Honey Queen. She started beekeeping three years ago through the Iowa Honey Producers Association's Youth Scholarship Program, and currently manage three hives of her own. After serving locally and representing her local beekeeping club as the Friendly Beekeepers of Iowa Honey Queen, she was able to advance to state and now represent honeybees, honey, and beekeeping on a statewide level! It is Carly's goal to educate and inform about honeybees, and help people have an interest in and ability to start beekeeping!

For those of you who were not at this past Monday's meeting, I introduced a District 6000 project: World Bicycle Relief. Please see this link, and check out the video!
These bicycles mean the world to the recipients in Zambia. It is equivalent to you or me receiving a car or truck. Children can travel to school, entrepreneurs can transport goods, healthcare workers can visit patients, and the list goes on and on. This opens up a whole new world for them. Please consider making a donation. You can do so directly on this site, or checks can be made payable to WBR. We can bundle checks together and do one mailing to World Bicycle Relief, which is a 501c3. Dollars are matched 1:1 during the month of July, so I would like to get as much done in this month as we can do make a greater impact!

As the world’s largest private provider of international scholarships, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International helps more than 1,000 students annually to study abroad and serve as cultural ambassadors. Rotary clubs around the world offer scholarships for secondary, undergraduate or graduate study. RI partners with seven prestigious universities around the world, providing opportunities to earn a master’s degree in peace and conflict resolution as well as water and sanitation. Global Grant scholarships last from three months to four years and can include an entire degree program. These scholarships are funded using cash or District Designated Funds matched by the World Fund.
District grants can be used to sponsor secondary school, undergraduate or graduate students studying any subject, either locally or abroad. The scholarship may cover any length of time, from a six-week language training program to a year or more of university study.
$7.5 million on average for scholarships are given by Rotary each year and over 350,000 scholarships have been awarded. Your support of the Rotary Foundation enables this to happen. Thank you.
