Foundation Minute

Summer is almost over, and it’s back to school season in most schools in the Rotary world. In sync with the Foundation’s focus on education and alleviation of poverty, some clubs have been busy improving the lives of young people around the globe.

The Bellevue Papillion Rotary Club of Bellevue, Nebraska purchased school supplies for 80 students whose families were financially incapacitated by the devastating flood that ravaged the area and rendered several homeless. The club spent a total of $10,000 at the rate of $125 per child.

On August 22, the Boothday Harbor Rotary Club of Maine held an auction that yielded $64,000 meant for helping non-profit organizations in town. Expressing his delight at the success of the fund-raising event, club president, Rick Elder explained, “we all help one another do the jobs we do.” Organizations that would benefit from this money include Big Brothers/Sisters, Student Aid Fund and the Elder Forum Elementary School and Playground.

Lending a helping hand to elementary students is one of the ways members of the Rotary Club of DeLand in Florida fulfils the Foundation’s mission. At its 14th Annual Bowling for Literacy Tournament, 28 teams raised $13,500 to benefit the Dictionary Project. The proceeds will be used to purchase age-appropriate dictionaries for 3,000 third-grade pupils and their teachers at public and private elementary schools in West Volusia.

Squirrel Fest, an all-day, family-oriented county festival, raised $10,000 for the Rotary Club of Longview, Washington, to support literacy, parks and service programs.  The club gave away a total of 661 books to children at the event.

Far away in Pakistan, the Rotaract Club is vigorously working to rescue children whose lives have been negatively impacted by illiteracy and poverty. According to Ebadat-ur-Rehman Babar, the 2019-20 Secretary of the Rotaract Club of Faislabad, 19 million out of 40 million children in Pakistan work as child laborers, grossly illiterate and living in deplorable conditions. Babar believes “education is the key to success” leading him to launch Gosha-e-llm, an Urdu word that means “Corner of Knowledge.”  The program aims at ending illiteracy by starting evening schools “for child laborers who do not have enough resources for their education. The students can earn their wages during the day and study in the evening. We are teaching them basics and involving them in different learning activities. We provide them all the necessary supplies including stationery.”

To help keep the Gosha-e-llm chain from rusting, visit the Rotaract Club of Faislabad on Facebook.
