RI President Ian Riseley supports giving clubs more flexibility in membership and meetings. "If you want to meet every week, and it suits your club, that's great. But there are people who can't do that, for whatever reason. To me, the flexibility is really important." (excerpt from the article in July 2017 Rotarian)

Speaker:  April Barsema, Dietitian at Mercy Medical Center

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that, if left untreated, can lead to health issues such as a heart attack, stroke, blindness, and kidney failure. One out of three individuals has pre-diabetes and most of them do not know it.  Having pre-diabetes indicates that blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.  Without lifestyle changes, many people with pre-diabetes can develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.  In this presentation, April will present information on diabetes and a new program offered locally that helps individuals who are pre-diabetic to make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

     Foundation Minute

In Brazil's Riberia Valley, a neonatal intensive care unit faced a problem.  It didn't have nearly enough equipment.  With only seven incubators, the unit at the state-run Dr. Leopoldo Bevilacqua Regional Hospital filled up quickly.  Newborns often would be transferred to another facility - a harrowing journey that the tiny,
fragile patients sometimes didn't survive.  This factor contributed to the hospital's high mortality rate.
The Rotary Club of Registro, Sao Paulo, stepped in to help, partnering with the Rotary Club of Nakatsugawa, Gifu, Japan, on a global grant.  They raised funds to purchase equipment, including incubators, cribs, ventilators, and monitors, and launched a publicity campaign about the importance of prenatal care and breastfeeding.  The clubs also provided training for at-risk pregnant adolescents
and education on maternal-infant health.
The new equipment doubled the capacity of the unit, which now provides care to 220 of the community's newest and tiniest residents each year.
Your continued support of The Rotary Foundation enabled this to happen.  Thank you.
